Have you ever wanted a pair of shoes so bad that you would do anything to have them? Movie stars spend thousands of dollars for one pair. Most people I know go to Payless where they have sales (buy one get the other pair free) now that's a sale. Well I have an Aunt that loves her shoes "like most women".
I went down to her house, about 60 miles from my house, to spend a few days. We decided that we would take a short shopping trip to North Carolina. We packed the car like we were going to be gone for several days, with water, snacks, wet wash cloths (my grandmother basics she had to have item). Oh yes I forgot a pair of shoes to change into after all the walking we planned on doing.
We loaded up the car and checked everything twice and then we were on our way. We were traveling about 40miles an hour when this 18 wheeler truck came along side of us and he waved. My thought was a young man that runs these big trucks, that she might know and he was just acknowledging her on the road. Then she saw a shoe fly off of the trunk. That's what he was trying to tell her that he had seen a shoe fly off before.
She immediately pulled off and in amazement she found out that she had put her favorite pair of comfortable shoes on the trunk and it did not close all the way. When she found this out it she had one of the saddest looks on her face I had ever seen. She said "Dale we have to go find my shoes". We were on a four lane expressway. Oh My!! She went off the next exit and proceeded to go back and get back on the road, about where the trucker had motioned her about her shoe. Her only concern was finding those shoes. As we made our way back on the expressway in the right direction she said "Oh Dale I think I see one". She pulled over in the emergency lane, got out, ran into the road and retrieved one shoe. We drove a little down the road and I spotted the other shoe. Again she pulled over and retrieved the precious shoe. I told her she could have lost her life trying to get that one pair of shoes, they must have cost a lot. She replied "they are just the most comfortable shoes and I think I got them at a yard sale".
Well that's my Aunt, she had her shoes. We were on our way to shop and we had a wonderful day sharing time with each other. But I will always remember things that make people happy are simple: family, friends and of course a comfortable pair of shoes.
